St. Petersburg Glass museum

These flame-born masterpieces are the work of talented glassmakers who create their art using a fragile material born from the widest variety of elements. Glass can be bent, blown and cut in many different ways — using methods practiced centuries ago as well as with the help of cutting-edge tools and technology. On St. Petersburg’s Yelagin Island the Museum of Decorative Glass shares its collection and secrets of the age-old craft with visitors. The museum’s impressive collection includes a huge vase — a monument to Leningrad, glass sculptures and puzzles. These are just a few of the museum’s more than 7,000 pieces, originally from the Leningrad Decorative Glass Factory. The museum was founded following the initiative of famed Soviet sculptor Vera Mukhina and it is thanks to her that the factory became the trend-setter when it came to glass in the Soviet Union. Join RTG TV host Eugenia Altfield as she studies the history of these fragile pieces.
