Crafts of Nizhny Novgorod

Nizhny Novgorod has always been a place rich in talent. Here artists and craftsmen aren’t only inspired by nature, but generously share their creations and inspiration with those around them. Khokhloma painting, known for its red and gold flower patterns on a black background, is a craft famous throughout the whole world. Despite the limited color selection, it seems that the expressive possibilities of the ancient craft are unlimited as the tradition is passed down from century to century. Craftsmen from Nizhny Novgorod Oblast know that the secret to creating this filigree is in the way the metal is worked. In a city called Gorodets, one can see how dishware and other household items are painted with this Gorodetsky design, as well as try special cakes that have been being baked in Gorodets for more than a century.
