Over the history of Kursk’s thousand-year history it has never attracted as much attention from the rest of the world as it did during the summer of 1943. This is when Kursk became the epicenter of many important events and when it lent its name to an important battle that helped change the course of the Second World War. The Battle of Kursk is one of the greatest battles in the history of mankind. It lasted 50 days and took place on the territory of five different oblasts in Russia and Ukraine. The most decisive and dramatic moments of the battle however, took place in the first days of combat in the Kursk and Belgorod Oblasts. For this reason, it is here in the city of Kursk that most of the museums, memorials and monuments dedicated to the Battle of Kursk are found.
