Resorts of Mineralnye Vody

In southwest Russia, on the northern slopes of the Big Caucasus mountain range, the Caucasus Mineral Waters can be found. The region, consisting of the resort cities of Pyatigorsk, Zheleznovodsk, Yessentuki and Kislovodsk, is known for the healing properties of its springs. The first written proof of the existence of mineral springs in this area is mentioned in Doctor Gottlieb Schober’s documents from the beginning of the 18th century. Almost 100 years later, Tsar Alexander I signed a historical document – an edict recognising the importance and need of the Caucasian Mineral Waters to the State. From that moment on – April 24, 1803 – the large-scale development of the area began. Both scientists and doctors studied water samples from different sources, determining the healing properties of water. Sanatoriums, health spas and luxurious parks were built in the area for the many resort-goers who visited and continue to visit the springs. Despite all this development, the Caucasus Mineral Water region has managed to keep its charm. Here you can still admire the picturesque mountain landscapes and sights and also receive therapeutic spa treatments, drink mineral water and stroll through the pleasant parks.
