Traditions of the Vologda Lands

Vologda Oblast makes up a significant part of the territory long-called the Russian North. Here beautiful northern nature and traditional Russian culture live in harmony. It is also known as the birthplace of Russian lace. In these delicate designs, woven from linen threads, one can feel how the spirit of more modern times is still entwined with a strong allegiance to old traditions. Volgograd Oblast is a place worth visiting even if just to try real Vologda butter, which is famous for its light nutty flavor. Monks once visited these northern lands in search of solitude and seclusion, and to this day many monasteries can be found here including Spaso-Prilutsky, the Kirillo-Belozersky and Ferapontov Monasteries, which are known for their unique frescoes - the work of the gifted painter Dionysius from ancient Rus.
