The Old Believers of Ust-Tsilma

North-west of the Komi Republic is the Nether-Polar krai of Northern European Russia. This area is known for its severe weather as it sometimes even snows in the summer, but nevertheless, people have been living here for hundreds of years preserving their own traditions, customs and the belief in their ancestors. Ancestors after all are the Gods in this krai. Our host Andrei Ivanov made a visit to the old villages of Ust Tsilma, Zamezhnaya, Skitskaya and Stepanovskaya to find out about the cultural traditions and everyday life of Old Believers in these rural Russian communities. He also visited the “dead” city of Pustozersk, the place where famous writer and fighter for old religion archpriest Avvakum was killed.
