One of the most famous cult constructions of Saint-Petersburg is the Grand Choral Synagogue. It's the main spiritual centre of Petersburg Jewish community. It was built in the end of the 19th century and was preserved almost untouched till today. Special feature of the main hall is its unique acoustics. Even whispered words can be heard in a distance of 10 meters. This effects is achieved due to arched ceiling. The hall can accommodate more than one thousand people. The Jewish Holy Book Torah is kept there. The faithful Jews start to learn Torah from the childhood.
During the holidays the Synagogue has several functions at once. Besides being spiritual centre, it is full-fledged theatre with a stage and auditorium. Religious performances take place there and traditional songs are sung.
