Traditions of the Peoples of the Republic of Mari El

The history of any people is brought to life through customs, beliefs, myths and legends. In the Mari-El Republic, people’s traditional culture is an integral part of their modern lives. Here Mari-El land is home not only to Russians, but many other nationalities including the Maris, who make up one of the territory’s largest groups. This ancient Finno-Ugric people from the Middle Volga region can be divided into three ethnographic groups: The Mountain Mari, the Meadow Mari and the Eastern Mari.
