Summer Gardens. Three Eras

St. Petersburg’s Summer Garden is the favourite child of Peter the First. During its almost three-hundred-year history, the park’s appearance has changed almost to the point that it is unrecognisable. The gardens’ were changed to match the fashion of the times, the desires of the rulers and even as a result of natural disasters. The destructive flood of 1777 almost completely ruined dozens of fountains, exotic water mechanisms and the elegant buildings that decorated the gardens. Many monuments and statues constructed under Peter’s rule were ruined and new works of art were brought in to replace them. Large-scale archeological investigations have allowed specialists to reconstruct the historical image of the Summer Garden, perfecting the location of the fountains, statues and the width of the park pathways present under Peter the Great’s rule.
