Honest, Wide, Merry, they call Pancake week in Russia in different ways. In Russian calendar it's the longest holiday, it longs for the whole week. Pancake is believed to help spring to drive winter away. In ancient times the Slavs heathens celebrated this holiday on day of vernal equinox. It was only in 10th century, when Christianity was adopted, that Pancake appeared to forestall the Grand Lent and depend on its terms. Ancestors of Russians used to say: «Gorge and guzzle one's fill, sing oneself hoarse and dance till one drops» by preparing to Pancake week full of treating and fun. They believed a person that spent Pancake tediously would be unlucky through the whole year.
