A journey around Nizhny Novgorod Krai is bound to have an effect on anyone who visits it. There talented people work in different trades and preserve ancient traditions while surrounded by the area’s picturesque landscape. One of the crafts they specialise in is the world-famous Khokhloma painting, which developed several centuries ago in the Koverninsky District when craftsmen began creating brightly decorated dishes. In the city of Gorodets people can admire carved lion and mermaid sculptures and see the various subjects Gorodetsky painting covers. In Nizhny Novgorod, the area’s main city, the Kremlin stands tall in the wooded hills. Nowadays this stone fortress is an architectural monument popular among both locals and tourists. It is impossible to count all of the many sights the city has to offer: Old buildings, museums, small side-streets and various quarters. Here domes of churches and gilded cupolas can be found anywhere and everywhere. One special attraction the city holds for Orthodox believers is the DIveyevo monastery — a holy place where Saint Seraphim of Sarov’s relics are kept.
